Back to School: The GCSE Maths and Science Preparation Guide

There are roughly four weeks between now and the start of the new school year. That is not a long time, but it is enough to make a real difference to how a student enters Year 10 or Year 11. The students who arrive in September having done absolutely nothing are not in a catastrophic position, but they do spend the first few weeks reactivating knowledge that has faded over the summer. The students who arrive having done a small amount of focused preparation hit the ground running from day one.

This guide is practical and specific. It covers exactly what to focus on in Maths and Science, how much time is realistic to invest without burning out before term even starts, and what to prioritise if time is limited.

You do not need to study for hours every day

Summer preparation does not mean sacrificing the break. Twenty to thirty minutes of focused, active revision on most days is more than enough to maintain and build on existing knowledge. The goal is not to complete the entire GCSE course over summer. It is to arrive in September sharper, more confident and not starting from scratch.

Why Maths and Science specifically

Maths and Science are the subjects where summer fade is most damaging and where early preparation pays off most clearly. Both subjects are cumulative: new content in Year 10 or Year 11 builds directly on what came before. A student who arrives in September with rusty algebra will struggle with the new algebraic topics introduced in Year 10 from week one. A student who has forgotten the basics of cell biology will find the new Biology content harder to absorb because the foundations are shaky.

They are also the subjects where many students carry a negative self-perception that gets reinforced every time content does not click quickly. Arriving in September feeling more confident and more fluent in these subjects changes that dynamic from the outset and can shift a student's relationship with the subject for the whole year.

Maths: what to focus on before September

The most valuable use of summer preparation time in Maths is consolidating the foundation topics that underpin almost everything else at GCSE. These are not the hardest topics. They are the ones that come up repeatedly across the course and that cause accumulated problems when they are shaky.

Priority 1: Algebra

Algebraic manipulation is the single most important foundation in GCSE Maths. Expanding brackets, factorising expressions, simplifying algebraic fractions and solving equations all feed into dozens of other topics. If any of these feel uncertain, spending time here pays dividends across the rest of the course.

Specifically worth revisiting: expanding double brackets, factorising quadratics, solving linear and quadratic equations and rearranging formulae. These come up in almost every exam paper and also underpin the harder topics introduced in Year 10 and 11.

Priority 2: Number and calculation fluency

Students who are slow or uncertain with basic number work lose time and confidence in every paper. Fractions, percentages, ratios, standard form and basic calculator use with the correct order of operations are all worth refreshing. On the non-calculator paper especially, students who are fluent with number work have a significant advantage over those who are not.

Priority 3: Graphs and coordinates

Plotting and interpreting graphs, understanding gradient and y-intercept, and working with straight line equations are topics that appear across multiple areas of GCSE Maths and connect to both statistics and algebra. A solid understanding of coordinate geometry from Year 9 makes the Year 10 content in this area much more accessible.

Priority 4: Geometry basics

Angle rules, properties of shapes, area and perimeter formulae and basic trigonometry are all worth refreshing. Geometry questions are a consistent feature of every GCSE Maths paper and students who have not worked with these topics over summer often find they need more time than expected to rebuild confidence with them.

Science: what to focus on before September

Science preparation before September is about two things: keeping existing knowledge active and identifying the areas from Year 9 where understanding is shakiest. GCSE Science in Year 10 introduces new content, but it does so in the context of foundations already laid. The more solid those foundations, the faster new content can be absorbed.

Biology foundations worth revisiting

Cell biology is where almost every GCSE Biology course begins. The structure and function of animal and plant cells, the differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, and the processes of diffusion, osmosis and active transport are all early topics that get assumed as background knowledge for most of Year 10 Biology. If any of these feel uncertain, they are worth reviewing before September.

Organisation of the body, including the organisation from cells to organs to organ systems, is also a foundation that runs through the Biology content students encounter throughout the course.

Chemistry foundations worth revisiting

Atomic structure, the periodic table and chemical bonding are the foundations of almost all GCSE Chemistry. Understanding what atoms are made of, how elements are arranged in the periodic table and why substances have the properties they do because of their bonding and structure underpins a huge proportion of the GCSE Chemistry content.

Chemical equations, including balancing them and understanding what they represent, is also a core skill that comes up across every area of Chemistry. Students who are not confident with equations find this a recurring stumbling block throughout the course.

Physics foundations worth revisiting

Energy, forces and electricity are the three pillars of GCSE Physics and the ones most heavily drawn on in Year 10 content. The concepts of energy stores and transfers, the relationship between force, mass and acceleration, and the basics of circuits and resistance are all worth refreshing. Physics calculation fluency, being comfortable rearranging and applying equations, is also worth practising before September because it is a skill that takes time to build and is tested continuously.

How to structure the time

If you have 30 minutes a day

Alternate between Maths and Science on different days. Focus on one topic per session. Use active recall: attempt questions from memory before checking answers. Keep it short and consistent rather than occasional and long.

If you have more time

Split sessions between Maths and Science in the same week. Spend the first part of each session on active recall of previous topics and the second part on something new. Use past paper questions to check understanding rather than just notes.

The most important thing is that sessions are active rather than passive. Reading through notes or a textbook creates the feeling of revision without building the retrieval strength that exams require. Every session should involve attempting to produce information from memory before checking it, working through practice questions, or explaining a concept aloud without looking at notes. Even brief sessions done this way are significantly more valuable than longer passive ones.

What to use

For Maths, the CGP GCSE Maths revision guides and workbooks are clear and well-structured for self-study. BBC Bitesize has free worked examples and practice questions across all GCSE Maths topics and is a reliable free resource. For more challenging questions, Corbettmaths has an enormous bank of topic-specific questions and worked examples available free online.

For Science, BBC Bitesize covers all three sciences at GCSE level clearly and is a solid starting point. The Free Science Lessons YouTube channel provides clear, specification-focused explanations for AQA content. For any topic where a concept is not clicking from notes alone, a short video explanation followed immediately by an attempt to recall the key points from memory is one of the most effective learning sequences available.

A note for parents

The most useful thing parents can do over summer is not to push students to study more, but to help create the conditions for short, focused sessions to happen consistently. A quiet space, a clear time in the day and the absence of phone distractions are more valuable than any amount of additional pressure. Students who feel positively about their preparation tend to carry that into September. Students who feel they have been forced to study all summer sometimes arrive more demoralised than those who did nothing.
