There is no shortage of tutoring available for GCSE and A-Level students in the UK. General tutors, subject specialists, online platforms, local agencies, freelancers advertising on community boards. The market is large and the quality varies enormously. Most families only discover the difference when they have already spent months on an approach that has not worked.

Learntit was built specifically to avoid the most common failure modes of tutoring. This post explains what those failure modes are, what we do differently and why the approach we take produces better outcomes for students.

Maths and Science only. Specialisation is not a limitation. It is what makes genuine depth of expertise possible.
Full spec coverage across every session. No topic left unaddressed because it did not come up in homework that week.
Understanding not memorisation. Students who understand why a method works apply it correctly in contexts they have never seen before.

The problem with most tutoring

The most common tutoring model works like this. A student struggles with this week's homework. A tutor helps them complete it. The student does better on that specific homework. The following week the pattern repeats with different homework. After several months, the student has received help with a series of individual tasks but their underlying understanding of the subject has not fundamentally changed. When the exam arrives, they face questions that do not look exactly like the homework they were helped through, and the gap becomes apparent.

This is not the tutor's fault in isolation. It is a structural problem with reactive tutoring: when sessions are driven entirely by whatever the student is struggling with that week, the broader picture, where are the actual gaps, what does the full specification require, what is the student's underlying level of understanding, never gets addressed systematically.

Typical tutoring

Reacts to this week's homework. Helps with the specific task in front of the student. Leaves broader gaps unaddressed. Progress is hard to measure and feels inconsistent.

Learntit

Works from the full specification. Identifies and closes underlying gaps systematically. Progress is tracked topic by topic. Students build genuine understanding rather than task-specific recall.

What Learntit does differently

Our approach is built on three pillars. Each one addresses a specific failure mode that we saw repeatedly in the way most tutoring is delivered.

Pillar 1: Full specification coverage

Every GCSE and A-Level subject has a published specification that defines exactly what students are expected to know and be able to do. The exam will only test content from that specification. A student who has covered every topic on the specification has no surprises in the exam. A student who has covered most of it, but left gaps because those topics did not come up in class that week or were not in the homework, is vulnerable to losing marks on questions that were entirely predictable.

At Learntit, sessions are planned against the full specification, not driven by whatever is in front of the student that week. We track which topics have been covered and which have not, so that by the time exams arrive every area of the specification has been addressed. Homework and class content are still part of the conversation, but they sit within a broader plan rather than driving the whole thing.

Pillar 2: Understanding, not memorisation

There is a meaningful difference between a student who has memorised how to answer a type of question and a student who understands why the method works. The first student performs well on familiar question formats and struggles when the presentation changes. The second student can adapt, because they understand what the question is actually asking and which underlying principle applies.

GCSE and A-Level examiners know the difference too. Questions are deliberately designed to test application in unfamiliar contexts, not just recall of familiar procedures. Students who have been taught to memorise approaches without understanding them hit a ceiling that more memorisation cannot fix. At Learntit, we always teach the why alongside the how. It takes slightly longer to build understanding than to drill procedures, but the results in the exam, particularly on the higher-mark problem-solving questions, are significantly better.

Pillar 3: Topic mastery through practice

Understanding a topic in a session and being able to apply it reliably under exam conditions are two different things. The gap between them is closed by practice: working through questions of increasing difficulty on a specific topic until correct answers are produced consistently, not just occasionally. This is where many students shortcut, moving on to the next topic as soon as they feel they have understood the current one, without the practice that converts understanding into reliability.

At Learntit, we do not move on until a topic is genuinely secure. That means practising it in session, setting targeted homework questions on it and returning to it later with fresh questions to confirm the learning has held. It is a more demanding standard than "I think I get it", but it is the standard that actually produces consistent marks in the exam.

Specialist, not generalist

Learntit works exclusively in Maths and Science. We do not offer tutoring across every subject at every level. This is a deliberate choice and one that some families initially find surprising, since many tutoring agencies advertise breadth as a selling point.

Our view is the opposite. Genuine depth of expertise in a subject requires sustained focus on that subject. A tutor who works across Maths, English, History, Languages and Science is spreading their attention across an enormous range of content, examination styles and grade boundaries. A specialist who works only in Maths, or only in Science, knows those specifications inside out, knows exactly where students typically struggle and exactly what the exam rewards. That expertise is what produces results.

For families whose student needs support across multiple subjects, we are the right choice for Maths and Science. For other subjects, we would rather be honest about our specialism than offer a diluted service outside it.

One-to-one and small group sessions

We offer both one-to-one and small group sessions, capped at five students. Both formats work well, but for different students and different situations. One-to-one sessions are fully tailored to a single student's specific gaps and learning pace. Small group sessions offer a more collaborative environment where students benefit from hearing each other's questions, at a lower cost per session.

Students joining a group mid-cohort do a brief one-to-one catch-up session first, so they are not disadvantaged by having missed earlier content. The group format works best for students whose gaps broadly align with their peers. One-to-one is the better choice for students with specific, individual needs or for those who want the fastest possible progress on a particular subject.

We offer a paid taster lesson

The best way to understand whether Learntit is the right fit is to experience a session. We offer a paid taster lesson for new students so you can see the approach in practice before committing to anything further. Get in touch through our contact page to find out more and arrange a time.

Who Learntit is for

We work with GCSE students from Year 10 onwards and A-Level students across the full two years of sixth form. Our subjects are Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

The students who benefit most from our approach tend to share a few characteristics. They are capable but have specific gaps that are holding their grade back. They are preparing for mocks or real exams and want targeted, structured support rather than general help. They are motivated enough to engage seriously with sessions but may not have found a way to study independently that is actually working. Or they are strong students who want to push from a grade 7 to an 8 or 9, and need the kind of depth and challenge that general revision does not provide.

If any of that describes your student, or you, get in touch. The taster lesson is the most straightforward way to find out whether the fit is right.
